Set Up Segments
The Segmentation Setup screen (Setup > General > Segmentation Setup) is where you set up the data segments for your TMS database.
What is a Segment?
A Segment is a portion of your TMS database that you section off for specific data records. This can be helpful for data segregation and reporting purposes.
For example, you might want to create a single segment in your TMS database just for your Biomed or Clinical Engineering records (work orders, equipment, time charges) and then other segments for your Facilities Maintenance records and Environmental Services records.
Segment Type Definitions
Segments exist in a hierarchy. Their place within the hierarchy depends on the segment type. Segments are broken down into three types:
-
System Segment - The System segment (segment 0) is automatically created by TMS, and it is where TMS system data/codes are stored. This data includes system codes, reports, alerts, forms Data cannot be created in the System segment, and data hard-coded in the System segment cannot be modified or deleted.
All Common and User segments exist under the System segment in the segment hierarchy. Think of it as the top level segment.
-
Common Segments - The Common segments are segments in which data, such as codes and assets, can be stored and shared across two or more User segments. Think of it as the middle level in the segment hierarchy.
-
User Segments - The User segments are segment in which all types of data can be stored (work orders, equipment and assets, schedules), but the data cannot be shared across any other segment. Think of User segments as the "children" of the System and Common segments in the segment hierarchy.
The number of User segments your organization can create with the TMS database is limited by the number of User segments your organization has purchased.
Although User segments are typically placed under a Common segment, they can also be placed directly under the System segment, so a User segment is usually the bottom level segment type, but it can also be on the same level as a Common segment.
