Cancel a Project

If a project has child tasks and subtasks, and you need to cancel them all, you can do so in one operation. If you need to make simpler changes, you can do so as described in Edit a Project. All changes to the canceled objects are recorded in the log. You must have the Cancel permission for projects to perform this task. To effectively cancel a project's parent asset, see Deactivate an Asset.

This feature must be configured by a system administrator as follows:

  • Users must be granted the Cancel permission for projects as described in Edit Role Information.

  • Reason codes must be specified for Cascaded Operations as described in Portfolio.

  • The master status mapping for Cancelled projects must be specified as described in Lookup Tables.

Important!

Canceling a project is a permanent action. Canceled projects cannot be reactivated. A maximum of 1500 total objects may be canceled by this feature. Child tasks that are already canceled or closed are not affected by this operation.

To cancel a project and all its child tasks, and subtasks:

  1. Navigate to a Project home page.

  2. In the toolbar, click Cancel Project.

A preview window opens to show the quantity of child objects that will be affected and a list of the first level of active child tasks that will be affected by the operation. The current sort order of the list is indicated by a blue icon to the right of the sort column name. You may change the sort order of a list by clicking a different column name. Click an object name to view it and its child objects in the main window.

  3. Select a reason from Reason Code to indicate why you are canceling the project. If no appropriate reason is listed, contact a system administrator.

  4. If necessary, enter an earlier date in Cancellation Date.

  5. When you are ready to proceed with the operation, click Cancel Project.

The operation begins in the background. A message appears in the preview window when the operation is complete or if it fails. If the operation fails for any reason, all changes made up to that point are rolled back and the Cancellation Date is set to N/A. Partial cancellations are not saved.
