Bulk Action Wizard

Use the Bulk Action wizard to create, modify, or delete metadata dependencies. The wizard guides you through three steps:

  • Step 1: Download and fill the template.

  • Step 2: Upload the template.

  • Step 3: Preview and submit the changes.

On the Dependent Metadata page, click Bulk Actions to open the wizard.

Step 1: Download and fill the template

Download a template that includes the metadata fields where you want to create, modify, or delete dependencies.

  1. Select the desired parent and child metadata fields.

  2. Click Download Template.

The Excel template downloads automatically in your browser.

  3. Open the template and edit it to:

Step 2: Upload the template

After editing your template with the selected metadata fields, upload it in the wizard to apply your changes to the dependency relationships.

  1. In the Bulk Action wizard, click Next.

  2. On the Select File page, select the template from your computer.

  3. Click Next.

Step 3: Review and submit the changes

Review your changes to confirm they are correct. This helps you avoid unwanted updates before applying them to the bucket.

This step displays any syntax errors, the total number of rows, and the number of changes. There are three possible types of changes:

  • Added new dependency: Displays each new dependency you created.

  • Edited dependency: Displays the changes you made to existing dependencies.

  • Delete dependency: Displays each dependency you marked for deletion.

After reviewing and confirming your changes, click Submit.

If you make a mistake, run the wizard again to delete, change, or recreate the correct dependencies.

ClosedTroubleshoot syntax errors

Fix errors in your template.

Metadata dependency set to delete does not exist in row (number)

To delete a dependency, only delete the determinant_value_id. If the other column values don't match the original data, the system shows this error. Download the template again and make sure not to change or delete any values except determinant_value_id.

Metadata Key and Value are invalid for dependant_key_id and dependant_value_id in row (number)

The child metadata key and value do not match. Open the template and review the data in the specified row.

Metadata Key and Value are invalid for determinant_id and determinant_value_id in row (number)

The parent metadata key and value do not match. Open the template and review the data in the specified row.

Child dependency has more than one parent – row (number)

Each child metadata field can only have one parent. This error appears when:

  • The uploaded template maps more than one parent to the same child.

  • A new parent is mapped to a child that already has a different parent configured.

FAQ

Closed1. What is the purpose of the Dependent Metadata page?

The purpose of the Dependent Metadata page is to let bucket administrators create, update, or delete relationships between metadata fields. One field (the child) depends on the values of another field (the parent).

Closed2. What is the difference between parent and child metadata?

The difference between parent and child metadata is that parent metadata (determinant) contains values that must be selected before child metadata (dependent) values become applicable or visible on artefacts.

Closed3. Can I create multiple dependencies for the same child metadata?

No. Each child metadata field can have only one parent. If a child field is already dependent on a parent, you can’t link it to another parent.

Closed4. How do I know if I’m modifying or creating new dependencies?

You know you’re modifying or creating new dependencies when you download the Excel template:

  • If dependencies already exist, the Dependencies tab is populated and includes a filled idcolumn.

  • If no dependencies exist, the Dependencies tab is blank and used for new entries.

Closed5. What happens if I accidentally upload the wrong configuration?

If you upload the wrong configuration, you can re-run the wizard using a corrected template to:

Closed6. What should I check if my dependency creation or update fails?

You should check the troubleshoot syntax errors section of this documentation.

Closed7. Why does my deletion fail even though I’ve filled in the ID?

Your deletion fails even with a filled-in ID because the first four columns must match the existing record associated with the ID. Make sure the determinant and dependent values are identical to the current configuration.

Closed8. Can I use metadata fields from different artefact types together?

No. Parent and child metadata must belong to the same artefact type.

Closed9. Is there a way to export the current metadata dependencies?

Yes, you can export the current metadata dependencies using the Download CSV button on the Dependent Metadata page.

Closed10. Can I add new metadata values and configure dependencies at the same time?

No. First, add the new values on the Metadata Fields page. Then, use the wizard to select the updated metadata field and configure the dependencies.
