Space Types
Space categories, subCategories, and types are used to classify a space or subSpace according to the general purpose it was designed to serve, for example, Laboratory/Classroom/Chemistry or Office/HR/Recruiting.
To simplify the user interface, Space Categories and subCategories are defined on a separate page from Space Types. The values you define on this page populate the Space Type drop-down menu on the Categorization pane of the the View Space, Edit Space, View SubSpace, Edit SubSpace, and Find Location page.
To open the Space Types page:

Open the Administration Menu page.

Under the SPACE ADMIN heading, click Space Types.
A space type defines the third-level classification of a space. To create a space type:

In the Space Category field, select the category that the type will be classified beneath.

In the Space SubCategory field, select the subCategory that the type will be classified beneath.

Click the Add Type link.
The Add Space Type dialog box opens.

In the Name field, enter the name of the space type.

In the Description field, enter a description of the space type.
This field can be used to provide more information about the space type. This value can be up to 1000 characters long. As you type, the character count updates indicating the number of additional characters that can be entered.

In the Tab Order field, enter a numeric value.
The Tab Order indicates the position, in menus, where this value will be listed. Lower numbered values are displayed toward the top of the list. Values will the same tab order will be sorted alphabetically.

In the Active field, select Yes to make this space type active.
Inactive values remain in the system, but are not displayed to users.

In the Number field, enter a numeric code to further classify the space type.

Click ADD.
The space type is added to the system. The space type parameters are displayed, including the name of the user who added the type and the date and time it was added.
External standard codes allow you to indicate any standards, such as the fire safety code, janitorial standard, or biosafety level, that are in place for a particular type of space. For example, you can use external standard codes to indicate that a Biomedical research laboratory has a biosafety level of BSL-2 and a janitorial standard of JL3. These codes are most often created by external organizations such as IFMA, BOMA, or OSCRE.
To associate an external standard code with a space:

In the Space Category field, select the category that the type is classified beneath.

In the Space SubCategory field, select the subCategory that the type is classified beneath.

In the Space Type field, select the space type that you want to associate the standard code with.

Click the Associate External Standard Codes link.
The Associate External Standard Code dialog box opens.

In the External Categories field, select the category that the code belongs to.
Codes are grouped into categories for ease of use.

In the External Category Codes field, select the code you want to add.
When you select a code, details about the code are displayed to assist you in making the appropriate choice.

Click ADD.
The code is added to the space type. The code parameters are displayed, including the name of the user who added the code and the date and time it was added. If you want to remove a code from the space type, click the Remove link.
Space types can be modified. For example, if you want to change the value that users see, you can modify the space type's name. To edit a space type:

In the Space Category field, select the category that the type is classified beneath.

In the Space SubCategory field, select the subCategory that the type is classified beneath.

In the Space Type field, select the space type that you want to edit.

Click the Edit Type link.

Modify any of the following values:
- Name – the value that users see
- Description – information about the space type
- Tab Order – the position in which the space type will be displayed in drop-down menus
- Active – Yes indicates that the space type is active (displayed to the user)
- Number – the numeric code associated with the space type

Click UPDATE.
The modified space type parameters, including the name of the user who edited them and the date and time when they were edited, are displayed.
Space types that have not been used can be deleted from the system. You can delete a space type if it has not been assigned to any spaces or subSpaces.
If a space type has been used but is no longer needed, you can edit it and make it inactive to prevent it from being displayed to users.
To delete a space type:

In the Space Category field, select the category that the type is classified beneath.

In the Space SubCategory field, select the subCategory that the type is classified beneath.

In the Space Type field, select the space type that you want to delete.

Click the Edit Type link.

Click the Delete link in the upper right corner of the dialog box.
A dialog box opens asking you to confirm your choice.

Click OK.
